PORSCHE CAYMAN

Coupe 3.4 981 S (2013)
It is hard to believe that 30 years have now passed since Porsche first began producing water-cooled only models.

Introduced in 1996, the 986 and 996 cars were a triumph for the brand and although they shared mixed initial reviews, these cars sold by the bucket load and were actually a fantastic product, yes they had IMS bearing and bore scoring woes, but in reality they were fantastically engineered machines, plus any "race car for the road" stands a chance of needing a rebuild if not looked after properly.

Building on their success came the 987/997 platform and a new "Boxster with a hard top" was born called the Cayman.
Initially Porsche held back the Cayman from being a 911 rival for obvious reasons, but when they launched the Cayman S Sport followed shortly by the Cayman R, it was evident they could see the potential and buyers clearly wanted more.
By 2012 the Boxster, Cayman and 911 had all secured their spots as "forever" models and when the 981 and 991 were launched, Porsche had upped the game yet again.
Better engines, better chassis, finally some technology that worked, and the models kept looking sounding and driving better than the last.
GT parts were now filtering into the Boxster's and Cayman platforms and Porsche sales were going from strength to strength, with buyers fighting to get hold of the GT3 rivalling GT4's, the Cayman was now considered a viable alternative with sales still booming.

Fast forward to late 2016 and the new 718 model line entered the showroom, better looking tick, better inside tick, better performance tick, better sound - fail. and this is where we feel things began to go wrong, with stricter emission regulations and increased material costs, Porsche had to improvise and use turbocharger technology to "cheat" the system and create a car that could outperform the last whilst sipping petrol and saving the planet. Yes these are still a Porsche masterpiece in their own right, and they do drive incredibly well, but we feel loosing the flat 6 heart and thus the soul of the car just didn't follow on from the great previous models.
Much like as fun as a 912 is, it just isn't quite a 911.

The Porsche timeline has some real highs and lows, many talk about "Peak" models and there is an argument for each and every one. For us the "Peak" Cayman's were 981 closely followed by 987.2, yes the new GTS 4.0 models are thankfully a return of the wonderful flat 6 configuration, but we are now talking serious money for "Just a Cayman".

Enter our very own 981 Cayman S 6 Speed Naturally aspirated Manual, which we will always consider to be one of the best value/performance Porsche models out there.

This striking Guards red S was first produced on the 10th of April 2013 and supplied and registered via Porsche Centre Swindon on the 30th April that year.

With the basics covered we set about improving and developing this car to be a serious GT4 chaser, and added some luxury along the way.

Inside the cabin the headlining and front pillars have been professionally retrimmed in Black Alcantara
A genuine Porsche phone kit was installed and multi function leather steering wheel added.
The gear shifter has been upgraded to a new Genuine GT4 item and we even swapped the Heated Sports seats plus for ones with crested headrests too!

Moving to the Chassis we love the X73 kit but wanted a little more, a Brand New H&R Spring kit was installed along with H&R roll bars and the car has been setup on our Beissbarth 3D alignment system to fast road specification.

The car has been plumbed for a remote operated switchable exhaust but is current running a stock item to keep the neighbours happy! We have both Stainless steel or factory switchable exhausts available to offer with the car, the tailpipes have been powder coated gloss black like a GTS.

Talking of GTS parts, we installed Genuine clear rear lights, we also have a brand new Porsche Gts body kit comprising of complete front bumper with all ducting and trims, centre radiator conversion and the correct GTS rear diffuser, these parts are all brand new in the box and can be included by negotiation.

The car has worn every possible set of 20" 981 wheels available, it is currently sat on a Perfect "as new" set of Sport Techno's which we felt really show off the brakes beautifully and above all are so easy to clean. We do have many other sets available if you would prefer a different style.

There are also numerous other bits and bobs we have done including a brand new rear window due to the common water staining at the bottom of the glass, new tuning forks, several oil changes, new plugs, brake fluid, it is running brand new BMC air filters and we have even renewed door check straps and any other items we found were showing their age. We also have a Brand New set of Pagid RSC brake pads that can also be part of a deal, these alone were circa £600!

It certainly drives as well as it looks and the only reason we are selling this car is we have moved up to a GT4 for 2026.

We purchased the car with a comprehensive 7 stamp service record and just 3 former keepers before ourselves.

The car will of course come fully prepared and warranted and we are certain you will struggle to find a better handling and braking 981 than this, let alone another with ceramic brakes.

We would love to see the car with the GTS kit on and there is definitely a very favourable deal to include all of the extras.
